Police are investigating an incident at Wynyard which has resulted in one woman being transported to the North West Regional Hospital with a head wound.
Tasmania Police said that at about 6.30pm on Sunday night a man unlawfully entered a residence on Old Bass Highway and assaulted a woman.
"The woman, aged in her seventies, received several head wounds from a blunt object," Police said.
"She has been transported to the North West Regional Hospital."
Police said a man had been taken into custody in relation to the incident. At this stage, no charges have been laid.
"The man is known to the victim," they said.
Tasmanian Fire Service is also on the scene extinguishing a fire in the residence, which Police said started shortly after the assault.
