William Street residents in shock after Saturday's murder suicide

Two days after the horrific murder-suicide in which Tasmania Police say Paul Carey killed Chris Walters and himself and seriously injured a woman, those who lived nearest have continued to express their shock and sadness.

One William Street resident woke to what she initially thought was a car backfire before police arrived on the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"She was crying and I could hear her saying 'he shot me'," the neighbour said.

"To hear that, it's not nice. Even now, it sends chills.

"It's not nice to see bodies being taken out of the house.

"I was shocked. You don't normally see something like that here, it's a pretty quiet area."

On Monday morning a bouquet of flowers was leant against an exterior wall of the house where the violence took place.

Shortly after it was taken by an officer from Tasmania Police to be delivered to the woman in the Launceston General Hospital.

Officers remained on the scene briefly while a carpenter repaired a doorframe damaged by police on entry, but examination of the scene has now ended.

Another neighbour in William Street, Naren Pandey, said he had taken the advice of Detective Inspector Kim Steven who said: "Give your kids a hug. Be kind to each other".

"When I woke up there were cops all around the street and we knew something really bad was happening," Mr Pandey said.

Mr Pandey said he had lived on the street for about six months, but had never had any interactions with the victims or offender.

"Its pretty horrible. Pretty sad. We're just taking it in."

William Street was closed for the entirety of Saturday, forcing butcher William Street Meats to also close.

While catching up on lost trade on Monday owner Nigel Green said the victims were not customers, but that he had seen them in the neighbourhood.

"It was certainly unfortunate, not something you could ever expect would happen," Mr Green said.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Mr Walters' grandparents and his daughter who was placed in their care.

Police continue to call for whoever sold Mr Carey the murder weapon, a Winchester shotgun, to come forward.
