The oval was booked for a Tasmanian State League Final between Launceston and North Launceston on Saturday, but after a wet couple of months the ground was not up to scratch.

West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said it was the first time the council had used a helicopter for "this sort of work".

"We believe that the helicopter has put our ground staff approximately two days ahead in drying the surface," she said.

"We understand the important role sport plays in our community and are always working to provide the best surface possible for local clubs."

The use of the helicopter was something that hasn't been done before, but a tactic the council was happy to test out to ensure the best possible playindg surface.

"The West Tamar council haven't hired a helicopter for this sort of work in the past but have spoken with other venues who have successfully used this method" said Mayor Holmdahl.

The stage is now set for the Northern derby blockbuster between home ground team Launceston and the North Launceston Bombers on Saturday.

The Development League semi-final will have Launceston and Clarence battle it out at Windsor Park at 10:15am.

The TSL semi-final will see Launceston play North Launceston at 12.45pm.
