Bass Highway potholes between Launceston, Devonport slammed

"Anybody that travels on the Bass Highway knows what it is like and everyone is complaining about it," Graeme Brown said.

"I have heard lots from people in our municipality about it and about people having to stop because they have got punctures. It is one of the busiest highways in Tasmania and it really needs fixing."

The Department of State Growth reports heavy rain has caused "potholes and other issues along many parts of the highway".

"Wet weather can take a heavy toll on the road surface," the department said.

"Many roadworks are suspended during winter when conditions are not ideal for works such as road sealing.

"We have instructed our contractors to ensure extra maintenance crews are on the road and attending to issues promptly.

"The department understands the impact of potholes on the travelling public and the state's freight industry and places a high priority on maintaining the condition of the state road network."

RACT chief advocacy officer Garry Bailey said it was "not good enough" that motorists had to put up with the highway in its current state.

"We know that poorly maintained roads are a significant contributor to accidents," he said.

"The RACT has been calling on the government to upgrade the Bass Highway between Devonport and Launceston for a number of years."

The department said it was maintaining the highway during winter.

"Road repairs during winter are often temporary," the department said.

"This ensures the road can continue to be used safely until a permanent repair can be made when the weather is more suitable."

Mr Bailey said the government should "put their money where their mouth is" and announce when its 10-year plan for the highway would be finalised and start.
