They said the man's family alerted authorities and they were told the man had a knife.
A long stand-off followed, with police negotiators involved and surrounding houses evacuated.

Police said nobody was injured when the incident in Blackwood Court was "resolved" at 9.50pm on Thursday.
Police said they would like to thank the Port Sorell community for its patience and understanding through "a long day".
Some police would remain in the area for a time to conclude investigations.
