New Horizons' Western Tiers Cycle Challenge fundraiser returns March 21

The 15^th annual Western Tiers Cycle Challenge is on Sunday, March 21 and event committee member Ruth Symons said the funds raised could not be more important.

The organisation's federal government funding runs out at the end of March.

It means from April onwards, New Horizons will rely on a state government sports and recreation grant and fundraising from the cycle challenge to continue services.

"At the end of March, our funding runs out and we will be existing on our cash reserves so every dollar raised will help keep the doors open ... as of the March 31, no dollars," she said.

"The funding is really important for us, we have a lot of faith in the community that they are going to support us and this is a tangible way that everybody can help us out.

"It's an inclusive ride ... you have the opportunity to ride alongside some of our members which is huge and uplifting for them and they're are the greatest people to spend time with, they just love life."

The committee is looking for more participants as the event returns to the streets after being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

New Horizons member Nic Milner said that he hopes the organisation, which means a lot to him, is able to keep providing programs which help people with disability.

"It means I can get out, be independent and play sports I love and hang out with friends and just have a really good time," he said.

Tamar IT director Andrew Dick said he hoped to see more people come on board and support the community organisation.

"I've been on involved sort of the outside of New Horizons for a number of years, and seen the great work they do ... it's a great opportunity for me to see if I can help with the funding," he said.

"I know they're under financial pressure so it's a good opportunity for me to do my bit and help out."
