Tasmania says no to international student quarantine request from New South Wales government

In New South Wales budget estimates the NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said that the two governments had been in "extensive discussions" about a plan that would allow returning international students, who study at NSW universities, to quarantine in Tasmania before returning to that state.

Premier Peter Gutwein has addressed the issue this morning, dismissing Tasmania's acceptance of such a plan.

"The Tasmanian Government confirms it has received an approach from the NSW Government to quarantine international students on their behalf," he said.

"At this time, however, we have advised this is not under consideration with our priority remaining the safe management of seasonal workers entering the State and our own international students when public health advice is that it is safe to do so."

New South Wales cannot take its returning international students into quarantine due to the Federal-government imposed cap on overseas arrivals.

In the Sydney Morning Herald it was reported that Mr Perrottet told the hearing that the government "had discussions with the Tasmanian government about how we could enter into a potential plan with them".
