Hook, Line and Sinker host Nick Duigan announced as Liberals candidate for Windermere

Mr Duigan was officially announced as the party's candidate on Sunday, following on from news anchor Jo Palmer's success for the party in Rosevears last year.

Hook, Line and Sinker has run for 20 seasons taking Mr Duigan around the world, but he spent all of 2020 in Tasmania due to the pandemic.

Growing up on Flinders Island in a Liberal-voting family who would buy rams off former prime minister Malcolm Fraser, Mr Duigan said he shared the party's core beliefs.

"I wasn't familiar with the Liberal Party's stated set of beliefs, necessarily, but I certainly have become familiar with those in the last month or so," he said.

"The Liberal values of 'a hand up not a hand out' and 'have a go, get a go', those sorts of things, they resonate with me.

"I've been in private enterprise for long enough to understand that if you're working hard, you want government to be on your side, not working against you."

Like his Labor opponent Geoff Lyons, Mr Duigan identified "jobs" as the key issue for Windermere.

Independent candidate Will Smith received the endorsement of retiring MLC Ivan Deal, who was keen to see the seat remain independent.

Mr Duigan said being a member of the government - rather than an independent - offered him a "seat at the table".

He said he had spoken with Ms Palmer about her transition from television to Parliament, having initially been "vaguely concerned" he didn't have the policy experience for the role.

"But I think she's been so supportive of me in saying that the skillset I've developed in my various jobs over the last 20-30 years are perfect for this," Mr Duigan said.

In addition to his television roles, Mr Duigan has been an ambassador for the Royal Flying Doctors, Neighbour Day and Marine Safety Tasmania.

Health Minister Sarah Courtney said that while their recent candidates did have "high profiles", it was down to "that person, what they're going to do for their community" to determine their electoral success.
