Junior Beef Expo at Deloraine gets kids off the couch and into the paddocks

The three day event sees participants looking after their own cattle. They also learn about judging cattle, biosecurity and land management, and a stack of other agricultural topics.

Kelsi Burr, 14, said that the expo provided a cool opportunity to get experience while meeting like-minded friends.

"Guess I've always had a bit of an interest in it and this has helped out evolving that interest into something I want to do," he said.

"It's great fun being able to come out here and being able to learn with a bit of hands on activity with the things that we're learning about."

The event started five years ago to provide Tasmanian kids experience in the agriculture and farming industry, without having to travel to the mainland to get it.

The event has proven a hit with many kids returning every year to further their industry learning, using important industry skills.

Melissa Sarich, whose daughter Meg participated at the expo, said the program had been highly beneficial for her daughter over the past two years.

After struggling at school, Ms Sarich said it was an agriculture teacher who encouraged Meg to attend the expo.

"She [Meg] felt like she found her people and was accepted by everybody and they all protected and looked after each other," Ms Sarich said.

"It's wonderful, she's learning skills and given confidence in herself and who she is."
