The AFL announced on Thursday night it had changed the Community Series fixturing to ensure no side would have to travel outside their home state in pre-season.
The announcement means Tasmania's drought of AFL content will stretch to more than a year before the Hawks host Adelaide on April 25.
"It has been almost 12 months since we have had the opportunity to play at UTAS Stadium and reconnect in-person with our Tasmanian members," Hawks chief executive Justin Reeves said.
"We are bitterly disappointed for our club, but most importantly for our 10,000 Tassie members and the local community that this will now not occur next week.
"Both President Jeff Kennett and myself will travel to Tasmania over the coming week and our team on the ground will continue our important work within the community."
The game will instead be played at North Melbourne's Arden Street base at 4.10pm.
"Of course we are disappointed our Tasmanian members and fans won't get to see us play next week, but we are cognisant of the fact these decisions are being made in the interests of managing a very real risk," Kangaroos chief executive Ben Amarfio said.
"We are pleased to offer the opportunity to Kangaroos and Hawks fans to watch the game at Arden St, as it will be the first time our Victorian-based supporters will have seen us play for a very long time."
The news comes at a turbulent time for football in the state.
Recent weeks have seen Premier Peter Gutwein and AFL boss Gillon McLachlan go head to head over plans for a Tasmanian team.
More than one year on from the release of the Tasmanian AFL taskforce's business plan, the AFL have requested up to another 12 months to assess the case with the help of an independent consultant.
Hawthorn and North Melbourne, who are both hoping to secure new deals with the state, have been made to wait as the Premier seeks a timeline on if and when the state can expect its own team.
In better news for football in Tasmania, Saturday's AFLW fixture between North Melbourne Carlton will go ahead as planned.
The game starts at 7.10pm at UTAS Stadium.
