Cataract on Paterson's support Launceston General Hospital with generous donation

The funds have been earmarked by staff to go towards the courtyard area.

Currently, the courtyard is a paved recreation area - pediatrician Dr Jodie Delanty said staff were looking forward to creating a more inviting space.

"Courtyards are there to be enjoyed by patients and families during their admission, and we know that spending time in the ward isn't a pleasant experience all the time," she said.

Nurse unit manager Angela Bransden said the outdoor area was vital to recovery.

"Sunshine and fresh air and the play aspect of healing is very important," she said.

"They've missed the outdoor space and the play because that's what children do - it's just paved at the moment, so we want to create a new space for the older children, and an area for developmental play for the children.

"We're also going to incorporate some things for physiotherapy purposes, like stairs so children can practice using crutches before they go home."

Cataract on Paterson owner Karen Burbury said the business supported the children's ward each year, and were proud to be able to make a contribution again.

"When we reopened in July, we knew we wanted to still do a special celebration, even if things would be more subdued this year," she said.

"We had 100 tickets and they sold out in around 15 minutes - we had mostly small business owners here celebrating the end of 2020, with mystery prizes, special lights and just a really fun night for everyone, our suppliers jumped on board to support and the staff donated their time.

"It was so important to do something for the community, because they're hurting as much as we are, so we were glad to be able to help out in whatever way we could."
