A Flinders Island District High School student is the first on the island this century to receive the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's International Award.
The award is an internationally recognised program for young people which aims to build the necessary attributes and skills to equip them for life and work.
The program focuses on four key areas - developing skills, getting physically active, giving service, and experiencing adventure.

Student Connor Wheatley, winner of the award, said he began to show interest in the program when it was introduced to the school and a teacher encouraged him to participate.
The physical recreation aspect was Mr Wheatley's favourite part of the program, and he chose to participate in Karate - with the program tailored to each student's individual interests.
He has registered to continue in the silver award program to gain more experience and knowledge.
"I would definitely recommend [the program] to other people, especially people my age," Mr Wheatley said.
Award state manager Steve Halloran said it was an honour to present Mr Wheatley with his award.
Mr Halloran said the award was linked to the Tasmanian Certificate of Education and completing the award gained a student points towards the certificate.
It is up to each school individually to offer the program to its students.
