The event has been a staple on the TSO calendar for almost two decades but will take a hiatus next year.
Five thousand tickets were allocated to the 2020 performance and in the past it has attracted up to 7000 people wanting to take advantage of the occasion.
IN OTHER NEWS:
A limit of 1000 people is currently imposed on outdoor gatherings based on public health advice.
The TSO said it could not proceed with the free performances, which are normally scheduled for Launceston and Hobart in February, citing uncertainty around the number allowed at mass gatherings going forward.
Provisions for social distancing and not wanting to limit access to the event was another factor the TSO considered in the regretful decision.
TSO CEO Caroline Sharpen said, "we are sorry that we won't be able to proceed with Symphony under the Stars concerts next year ... However, given the uncertainty around mass gatherings we have decided not to go ahead."
In lieu of physically attended performances in 2020 the TSO exhibited regular virtual performances and it will continue to do so throughout the year and into 2021.
