The crash occurred just before 1pm, one kilometre south of Ross.
Police investigations have indicated that a Ford Ranger towing a caravan was travelling north when a solar panel became dislodged and fell into the south bound lane.
A Celica travelling south took evasive action to avoid the panel and lost control, colliding with a Commodore travelling north behind the caravan.
WARNING: IMAGES MAY BE DISTRESSING
The driver towing the caravan was unaware of the crash and continued to Epping Forest. He has since been spoken to. There were 3 children and 2 adults in the ranger and caravan.

Tasmania Police northern district acting Commander Kate Chambers said this is a tragedy for the Tasmanian community.
"This afternoon Tasmania has experienced a tragedy and that is the death of three individuals on our roads," she said.
"The crash today was the result of an incident which had a devastating outcome. It was not the result of reckless driving behaviour."
We are making a plea for drivers to do their part to make the remainder of the school holidays fatality-free."
The Highway is now clear, with traffic flowing in both directions.
