On Saturday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall for the East Coast and parts of the North-East and Midlands areas, including towns such as St Helens, Scamander, Bicheno and Swansea.
The rain in the state's east is being generated by a low-pressure centre that will move to the North-East on Sunday.
In other news:
Thunderstorms brought heavy rain to some areas in the North-East overnight. According to the bureau, the heaviest falls were recorded at St Patricks Head (77 millimetres) and Gray (64 millimetres).
The BoM has forecast that a further 50-100 millimetres of rain will fall in the East Coast by Sunday evening.
It's likely that gusty easterlies and large waves will occur along the coast tomorrow but these are expected to remain offshore. However, they could bring heavier rainfall if they extend over the coast, the BoM says.
An initial minor flood warning is in place for the North Esk River, while a moderate flood warning is active for the South Esk River.
The bureau has also issued a flood watch alert for the North, North-East, East Coast, South-East, Derwent and Huon catchments.
