Tasmania Police seize drugs, guns during Hadspen raid

Tasmania Police drug dog Fang sniffed out the suspicious package during a routine mail screening earlier this month, leading police to an address on Monday night.

During the raid, detectives seized about 28 grams of ice, with a potential street value of about $30,000.

Guns and ammunition were also found at the property and seized, and two men were taken into custody.

Troy Anthony Gall, of Hadspen, appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, and firearms offences.

The 26-year-old pleaded not guilty and was bailed to appear in the Launceston Supreme Court on October 12.

A number of further counts were adjourned indefinitely by Magistrate Sharon Cure including possessing ammunition when not the holder of the appropriate firearm licence.

Court documents show he had 459 .22 cartridges, twelve 12-gauge shotgun cartridges, two .303 cartridges, one .308 cartridge, seventy four .223 cartridges, six 12-gauge shotgun cartridges, two .310 calibre, 39 .223 calibre, 9 .222 calibre and one .17 HMR calibre.

A 28-year-old Kings Meadows man was also charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and firearms offences and was bailed by police.

Monday night's raid comes after police seized 312 grams of ice in May this year.

A 44-year-old Invermay woman was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, unlawfully importing a controlled substance, use a controlled drug, and possess a controlled drug.

Detective Inspector Craig Fox said police were targeting mail importation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Due to the fact there is less people coming into Tasmania, we believe there is less avenue for drug couriers to bring product in, so drug investigation services across the state have been using this opportunity to focus more on mail centres," he said.
