Fish stocks precarious position
About Brett Smith's letter (The Examiner, July 25) regarding super trawlers, Brett, you are so right in stating that the commercial fishing industry as a whole (not only but including super trawlers), has depleted the stocks of fish to dangerously low levels that may never recover to previous levels.

Unfortunately, this does not only apply to sea fish. Our highland lakes and most river systems are also suffering very low catch levels compared to what was available five to 10 years ago. When one asks IFS staff why the answer is like a cracked record, "there are more fish available than ever".
Why is it then, that by using the same methods as previously, can the average fisherman find it almost impossible to catch trout in sufficient numbers to make the effort worthwhile, while still paying increasing fees for the privilege.
When it comes to commercial fishers (not all, but most) will continue to extract the maximum allowable to facilitate exports while leaving our stocks depleted.
Only when we completely run out, will these greedy people realise that you can't eat money. Why don't we do as is practised in the Isle of Wight, where tourists have gone there, to experience their lobsters and fish, adding to the booming tourist industry while locals can still catch a feed.

Mask wearing about being decent
PEOPLE are confused about their assumed human rights and wearing masks.
The confusion seems with being a responsible human being and being an arrogant and stupid one. Luckily these clowns film themselves to show ordinary people how not to behave.

Eric Abetz history lesson perfect
CONGRATULATIONS to Tasmanian senator Eric Abetz (Examiner, July 29) for his depiction of the Canberra political imbroglio of late 1975 and his description of the implosion of the Palace Letters conspiracy resulting in gross disappointment to its most fervent adherents, who, after lighting the wick and blowing on it to fan the burning, saw it spectacularly blow up in their faces.
By likening Governor-General Sir John Kerr's dismissal of the Whitlam Government and the foreshortened general election date to a footy game with the umpire blowing the whistle, Senator Abetz explained in terms able to be understood clearly even by five-year-olds, what took place in our greatest constitutional crisis.
To round out the senator's match report, add these stats: Pre-Kerr election. Fraser 61 seats versus Whitlam 66 seats.
Post-December 13 voting: Fraser 91 seats vs Whitlam 36 seats.
Norm Smith Medal: J. Kerr QC (Australia).
