As part of the Working Together for 3 Year Olds program, eligible three year olds will have the opportunity to attend preschool for free at certain centres from next year.
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the announcement followed a successful pilot of the program this year, which saw "incredible results" for participating children and families.
Toni Bourke's four-year-old son Tarkyn was one of 10 children that participated in the pilot at Lady Gowrie Child Centre at Newnham.
She said it had a big impact on his life, and hers.
"Tarkyn is quite full-on, and he likes to have attention and be outside," she said.
"To start with he was quiet and would cry when I left, but now all he talks about is his friends and that he can't wait to see them."
Mr Rockliff said the initiative would fund 120 places for eligible children next year, with a further 120 places in 2021.
An expressions of interest process identified the 20 services to deliver the program across the state.
Only three centres in Northern Tasmania were chosen for the program: Ravenswood's Discovery Early Learning Centre, Newnham's Lady Gowrie Alanvale Child Centre, and Glen Dhu Children's Services to service Invermay.
A state government spokesperson said these locations were selected to ensure "free, quality early learning can be accessed by those who need it most".
This was based on criteria such as unemployment rates, number of Housing Tasmania tenants, school attendance rates, and educational and developmental vulnerability.
They said centres in outlying areas such as George Town or the East Coast were not assessed, however it was envisaged the program may be offered in those areas in coming years.
