The 2019 West Tamar Youth Survey was conducted as part of the council's youth strategy, which launched last month.

Of the 951 participants aged between 10 and 24 who live, work, attend school or are "significantly connected" to the council region, 54.7 per cent said bullying was the biggest issue.

A total of 49.5 per cent ranked mental health the highest concern, followed by smoking (49.4 per cent), drugs and alcohol (46.8 per cent) and online safety (41.2 per cent).

Comments around transport and facilities also came up. "There is a lack of bus transport," noted one comment included in the strategy document.

In her comments, mayor Christina Holmdahl said the council understood the importance of engaging young people, who "play a vital role in our community".

"We endeavour to work with them in meaningful ways to build shared understandings, promote inclusion and provide opportunities for them to realise their potential," Cr Holmdahl said. "The Youth Strategy details how our Youth Services will continue supporting the young people who live, educate and work in our municipality."

"The key goals of the updated strategy highlight our aim for young people to be engaged, connected, empowered and ambitious, as we continue to develop and implement new initiatives designed to promote positive youth development, as our young people make the transition to adulthood."

The strategy was released at the council's October meeting and has been taken back to the community in a number of events.

Friday saw a Skate, Beats and Eats event at the newly upgraded Legana Recreation Area, hosted by the Youth Advisory Council with free activities and live music.
