A police spokesperson said officers were called about 8am on Friday.
A group from the Bob Brown Foundation set up the blockade last Sunday, following a 24 hour treetop campout.
A BBF spokesperson said more than 20 police were on the scene.
They said police had come to remove the protesters, including a person sitting 25 metres up an ancient eucalyptus tree, and also the blockade camp.
"Premier Hodgman has failed the climate, wildlife, and Tasmania's economy today again," Bob Brown Foundation campaign manager Jenny Weber said.
"Sending in a small army of police to remove people from protecting an ancient rainforest from logging is a shame.
"Our Foundation remains committed to protesting in defence of these ancient forests."
Tarkine campaigner Scott Jordan said Sustainable Timbers Tasmania's logging plans were a "failing, outdated business model".
"[The logging plans] represent the ongoing wood-chipping of threatened species habitat, the loss of more of Tasmania's ancient wilderness like takayna/Tarkine and more public subsidies," he said.
We will continue to defend ancient rainforests and tall eucalyptus forests rich in carbon and critical wildlife habitat.
"Endangered Tasmanian Devils, spotted-tailed quolls, a vast list of birds and many more important wildlife rely on these intact old-growth forests for habitat."
No arrests have occurred at this stage, police say.
