A proposal to convert the bottleshop at the tavern to a F45 gym was knocked back at the City of Launceston council meeting on Thursday. The F45 gym would move from its George Street location to the Lawrence Street site and operate seven days a week. The first weekday class would start at 5am.
Ten nearby residents spoke against the proposal, and another four spoke for it, with the discussion about whether to approve the gym lasting more than hour.
Concerns about traffic, opening times and loud "doof doof" music were raised as concerns from residents and councillors.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Resident Andrew Barnett raised concerns about noise saying the music sound would travel.
He said the gym is proposing to operate outside of "reasonable" hours, which are from 7am Monday to Friday, 9am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday.
"This is going to be us all day, everyday," he said.
"It was a problem to try and close it down with the bar around the corner in another sporting complex. It took them 12 months to try and close that operation down and you're wanting the rest of us to suffer this for 12 months."
Property owner Peter Dixon purchased the site in 2010.
"Over the years, turnover in that bottle shop has fallen from $47,000 a week, down to $13,000. It loses money every week and it has to close," he said.
"Therefore I can either sit with a vacant property and add it to a list of vacant properties that currently exist for the city, or I find a solution."
Councillor Karina Stojansek spoke against the item.
"I don't like to admit this. But I don't have the confidence in our own internal systems to be able to respond and act on any potential breaches,"
Councillor Paul Spencer was the only one to vote for the recommended approval. Councillor Tim Walker and Rob Soward were not at the meeting.
