Defence lawyer Kirsten Abercrombie in Hobart's Supreme Court on Friday said Jones had lodged the appeal to meet the time expiry on the process but was yet to know whether his appeal would receive Legal Aid assistance.
Jones was last month convicted by a jury for the murder of Mr Breward on New Year's Day in 2017.
Jones had been in pursuit of Mr Breward after he believed the 22-year-old had stolen his Nissan Patrol a month earlier.
A bounty was placed on Mr Breward's head and a $5000 reward offered for the return of the car.
A girlfriend of Mr Breward's friend gave up his location and Jones subsequently visited a Newnham unit where he kicked, punched and waterboarded the victim.
Mr Breward suffocated inside a plastic bag which was wrapped around his head by Jones.
Jones received a 22-year sentence for the crime with a non-parole period of 13 years.
Justice Helen Wood adjourned the hearing on the appeal to August 8 at 4.15pm.
