The 23-year-old Lauderdale defender was unveiled to his teammates as captain during Tuesday night's training session at UTAS Stadium, the team's final hit-out before Sunday's clash with Vic Metro at the same venue.
Coach Jamie Hayward said McGuinness had been "stoked" to become the state's first under-25 skipper since Glenorchy's Brayden Webb led Tasmania to a loss against the NEAFL in 2017.
"There was a fair bit of alignment from everyone that's been involved in the selection process - developing this team over the last four weeks we were pretty well aligned on Josh being the skipper," Hayward said.
"He has a really significant background with state representation and more importantly we think he's of the right age and maturity that he'll perform that role really well."
