The government is working with the greater Launceston councils to improve transport in the region and implement the commitment to improve traffic flow in Launceston, a spokesman said. 

"This includes the planning, design and costing of a new Tamar River Bridge and we anticipated the feasibility study for this project will be done within the next two years," he said. 

"As outlined in our election announcement, our commitment for the bridge project is for these initial, critical planning works to be undertaken."

The bridge study is part of a $92.5 million election commitment from the 2018 state election. 

The proposed bridge would cross the Tamar River, north of Cormiston Road.

At the announcement, Treasurer Peter Gutwein said designing and costing for the bridge would start straight away, after a number of studies showed the need for a second river crossing.

Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding said the bridge could be a reality within 10 years, with construction estimated to take three years once planning and approvals were completed.
