The man remains in a stable condition at St Marys Community Health Centre, after three masked women broke into his Talbot Street home about 12.10am on Tuesday.
After demanding money from him, the women punched and kicked the man using a wooden club, before attempting to tie him up and threatening to shoot him.
The man was able to fight back and the women fled the house after about 10 minutes.
Acting Inspector John Parker said police would like to speak to anyone who knows the identity of the three women involved.
Anyone with information should contact Launceston CIB on 13 14 44 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
The man is expected to be released from hospital in the next few days.
