The Big Bash to go bonkers

UTAS stadium will play host to three Big Bash games this New Year weekend. The Hobart Hurricanes men's team will play against the Perth Scorchers on Sunday, along with the Women's team playing against the Brisbane Heat both Sunday and Monday afternoons. Sixteen thousand people are estimated to fill the stadium, in one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

BeerFest to bring in the new year after date change

Bands, comedy and DJ sets will help bring in the new year at BeerFest, with Luke Parry, John and Jai, Candy Feet, and The Kicks along with DJs later in the night. There will also be an increased number of children’s activities, plus, of course, New Year’s Eve fireworks, along with the beer, cider, wine, cocktails, and food vans on offer. Entry into Royal Park for the event is $24. 

Never Gonna Give You Up, Hurt You

One Hit Wonders night at Greenwood Bar, Cimitiere St

If New Year’s Eve falling on a Monday night doesn’t quite work for you, there’s still plenty to do on Saturday. Greenwood Bar is putting on a One Hit Wonders party, with drink specials all night. Expect to hear Rick Astley at least once.

Blues Brothers Revival 

The Country Club will be celebrating New Year’s Eve with a Blues Brothers revival show and dinner, including a three course meal and a fabulous show with Jake (Styne Ashton) and Elwood (Darren Sangwel) playing all the hits from the original Blues Brothers movie. The Taste of Tasmania 

Normally we wouldn’t include Hobart events in this list, but with so many Northern Tasmania producers featured, we would be remiss not to. From the Flinders Island Long Lunch to Native Bush Tucker to sausage-making classes to the Gin Supper Club, patrons are in for a delicious New Years weekend. There will also be killer music on the menu, with a 10-piece big band led by ARIA-winning composer and pianist Barney McAll, featuring guest singers including Tex Perkins, Ella Hooper, Monique Brumby, Mojo Juju and Loretta Miller. Two new gibbons at Tasmania Zoo ready to meet their fans

Okay, they’re actually lesser apes, not monkeys – but the two white-cheeked gibbons newly arrived at Tasmania Zoo are definitely worth a look. Nhu, 7, a blonde female, and Tiane, 6, a black male, came to Tasmania from the Adelaide Zoo.
