A 24-year-old man and 40-year-old woman were held up inside a property on New World Avenue armed with a small calibre weapon from about 4.30pm on Friday afternoon.

Police stormed the house about 9.45am on Saturday.

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Craig Fox said police still had control of the scene.

“Forensic crews and ballistic experts attended again [on Sunday], and they’re still doing a systematic search of the property, and that includes inside and outside,” he said.

“Once they’ve finished we’ll do a search of the residence with our general officers and CIB, and at the completion of that search we’ll consider handing the property back over to the owner of the property.”

Acting Inspector Fox said the inside of the house was “a scene of chaos”.

“I won’t go too much into the exact nature of the scene, because investigations are still on going, but obviously with the tactical entry that we made early on Saturday morning there was some damage caused there,” he said.

“We’ve been in contact with the owners of the property.

“We’ve explained exactly what has been damaged and they’re more than happy with police actions to date.”

Inspector Fox said the man and woman remained in custody, and had not been questioned as of Sunday afternoon.

“They’ll best questioned when we complete our investigations here at the scene, and speak to witnesses,” he said.

“When we’re happy that we have all that information we’ll conduct our questioning at the Launceston Police Station.

“Until we’ve spoken to the two people in custody, we won’t finalise any charges.”

Acting Inspector Fox said the victim of the shooting that occurred at the property on Wednesday was still in hospital.

The relationship between the 24-year-old man and 40-year-old woman is yet to be confirmed.

Acting Inspector Fox said questions would be asked into whether there was a link to the armed robbery of the Wellington Street BP on Thursday night.
