The Johnson kennel held all aces in the $5000 to-the-winner race with six runners engaged including $1.90 favourite Buckle Up Axon, while Old Beach trainer Michael Sutcliffe had the other two runners.
Raced and bred by Gary’s wife Robyn Johnson, Buckle Up Izy, at her 13th start, led from box rise before staving off a late charge from Buckle Up Axon to score by ¾ length in 30.13. Buckle Up Kiona was 4 lengths away third.
“It’s great to see Buckle Up Izy get a big win like this – she’s been running well,” Robyn Johnson said.
“There is no better feeling then breeding and racing your own.
“To get six runners in a final is a huge achievement for Gary and myself.”
Meanwhile, in Hobart on Thursday night Peco Can turned in another top performance recording 25.73 as she raced to her ninth win at the track.
She jumped a length in front in the Invitation and the result was never in doubt as she thrashed her rivals by just over six lengths.
St Leonards trainer Robin Grubb has the bitch right on target for next month’s group 1 Hobart Thousand series.
Another highlight of the past week came at Devonport on Tuesday when Wynburn Jackson took out the Tasbred Maiden Series final for Penguin trainer Butch Deverell and the Wynburn Racing Team.
The $6 chance comfortably accounted for Flash Holly who started $4 favourite in a wide-open race.
Wynburn Jackson recorded a very smart 25.81.
