St Helens beauty spa Relax You Deserve It has been recycling its beauty products in an effort to help tackle some of the waste created by the beauty industry by joining the “revolution on waste”.
“The Relax team is personally committed to recycling and waste reduction, knowing that our industry creates and uses a lot of plastic packaging,” owner Julie Castor said.
Relax are helping to curb waste by working with innovative recycling company TerraCycle, which specialises in hard to recycle waste.
It offers free recycling programs to help Australians recycle waste such as coffee capsules, toothbrushes, and beauty products.
“We encourage our entire community to bring their empty beauty products to our spa to be recycled,” Ms Castor said.
Empty beauty products and oral care waste are also being recycled by the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council.
Sustainability officer Cynthia Maxwell-Smith said one of the most wasteful things taking place in our society was “treating waste as waste”.
“Most products are made from valuable raw materials that can be recovered, recycled or reused,” she said.
“TerraCycle’s ability to deal with these otherwise non-recyclable waste items inspires us to recycle more and waste less.”
TerraCycle hopes to show that towns are never too remote to recycle as part of National Recycling Week 2018.
Now in its 23rd year, Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week aims to put a national focus on the environmental benefits of recycling.
Despite about 98 per cent of Australians recycling, many are unaware of what goes on behind the scenes.
The theme for 2018, From Waste War to Recycling Reboot, aimed to sort out any confusion in communities on how to recycle correctly and what happens to recycling after it goes in the bin.

- National Recycling Week will run until November 18.
