Ms Knop, who went into labour at 11.15pm on New Year's Eve, said the family would now have something extra to celebrate every New Year's Day.
"I had a feeling he might come early, but I'm just glad it didn't happen over Christmas," she said.
New father Andrew Claxton has had a long local football career, starting with City-South, which merged with East Launceston to form South Launceston.
He then went on to play at Deloraine and in premierships with Perth before ending up with the Launceston Football Club.
Since then he has coached junior sport and been a runner for the Tassie Mariners.
He said there was a possibility that Jai might one day follow in his sporting footsteps.
"He's certainly got the length for it," Mr Claxton said.
Ms Knop agreed that there might be another footballer in the family.
"There were quite a few kicks during the pregnancy," she said.
