More than 100 people working near Devonport will lose their jobs after a shock announcement by JBS Australia.
The company has announced plans to permanently cease operating its Devonport City Abattoir on November 15.
JBS has operated the Devonport City Abattoir since 2008 as a service kill facility for customers who supply their own livestock for processing.
The facility processes most of Tasmania’s pigs, and can process up to 200 cattle, 600 pigs and 3800 sheep per week.

JBS will continue to operate the abattoir while it discusses future options with the Tasmanian Government and industry.
The government hopes to find a new operator for the pig line and work with the industry to accommodate a transition process.
The plant is located adjacent to the Devonport saleyards, on the banks of the Mersey River in the centre.
JBS Australia is the largest meat processing company in Australia.
