Stall holders battled the elements when setting up on Saturday morning, but were rewarded once the festivities started, with more people turning up for the beginning of the festival than last year.
Cityprom chief executive Steve Henty said it was great to see the fiesta on track after some initial weather concerns.
“We were obviously a little bit nervous in the morning, but we had a good eye on the weather, and we were pretty confident it was going to clear up by 11am,” he said.
“The turnout for the first couple of hours has given us high hopes for the rest of the day.
“We’ve gone for a little bit of a different layout this year, which really highlights some of the boutique stores and hospitality of the precinct.”
More than 25 food and beverage vendors from George Street and surrounds are represented as part of the celebration, which also includes live entertainment from The Embers, SUNDAZE, and Emily Sanzaro, as well as children’s activities by YMCA, a jumping castle, a balloon artist and a Barratt’s music workshops for kids.
Fiesta on George will be held until 9pm on George Street in the area from Paterson Street to York Street.
