Governor of Tasmania Kate Warner opened the prize at the Academy Gallery, and said that the prize promotes awareness of culture, visual arts, women and gender issues across Tasmania.
The competition is open to Tasmanian artists identifying as women across all mediums.
It began in 2002 as the Material Girl prize, rebranding this year as the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania.
Lou Clark, principal advisor communities, Bell Bay Aluminium, said the company wanted to be involved in supporting female artists.
“We are delighted in 2018 to provide ongoing support for what we believe will become one of Tasmania’s prestigious art prizes,” she said.
“We will continue to recognise, advance and showcase the achievements of women artists in Tasmania.”
There are three prize categories: the $15,000 acquisitive prize presented by the Trawalla Foundation, the $3000 Bell Bay Aluminium People's Choice award and the $1500 Zonta Tasmania Emerging Artist prize.
Entries can be made online through www.womensartprizetas.com.au.
The finalists will be displayed in Launceston from March 12 to April 5 2019, with winners announced on March 15.
