Students from Brooks High, East Tamar and Invermay primary schools visited the Bridestowe Lavender Estate on Thursday as part of the Children’s University of Tasmania program, immersing themselves in the the sights, smells, and tastes of a working lavender farm.
Splitting into two groups, students took turns making lavender scones and distilling the plants into oil.
The program, established in 2015 by UTAS' Peter Underwood Centre, now involves 33 schools across the state and nearly 800 students from ages 7 to 14.
Marcel Kerrison, regional officer with the Peter Underwood Centre, said it was great to also showcase some of the region’s tourism for the group, too.
“It’s really a way of engaging children and parents to participate in extra-curricular activities outside of the classroom,” she said.
“It’s also a way to get them excited about the possibilities beyond grade 12.”
