Construction company the Baker Group have been working through the night on a 24-hour cycle to complete the project, general manger Nigel Baker said.
“We’ve been working pretty much around the clock for the last two-and-a-half months,” he said. “While everyone else has been asleep, the Baker Group has been working.”
The mall will include thylacine-themed art installations including ten bronze sculptures, 100 seats, 300 square metres of roof canopy, LED lighting, upgraded storm water infrastructure, and 55,000 hand-laid pavement tiles.
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the re-opening of the first section of the space would be exciting.
"The businesses in the mall have been extremely supportive of the project and I sincerely want to thank them for the constructive and collaborative way they have been working with us since April," he said. "Their feedback and support has been very important, and I'm thrilled the public will now get a chance to see the quality of the work The Baker Group has been undertaking in the mall"
“We think Launceston is a city that deserves modern urban infrastructure and public spaces and I'm thrilled with the engagement we had with the designs during the public consultation process, and the positive comments we've been hearing from the public and business owners as the redevelopment has taken shape."
