Meander Valley Council bought a property on Westbury Road “some time ago” to allow for the entry to be built.
At the council’s August meeting, it approved a development application to demolish the existing house on the property.
Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins said the plans were all about enhancing safety.
“It’s part of the ongoing development of Prospect Park and enables us to improve the junction off the Bass Highway onto Westbury Road,” he said.
“The reason why we have to put a new entrance in is so we can alter the traffic around where people park so it makes it safer for the sports ground, stops the competition between vehicles and particularly children running between grounds.
“Safety is the primary focus.”
Councillor Perkins said the idea had been in progress for three or four years.
“We’ve just been waiting for the right time. We purchased the house some time ago, but people have been renting it and now we’re ready to move to the next stages,” he said.
“We’ve started the process to commence the demolition, which will allow the new entrance way to be built.”
Once the planning permit has been provided to the council for the demolition of the house, the project will be put out for tender.
“We will seek someone to come in and demolish it,” Cr Perkins said.
He said money had been budgeted for the project.
The demolition will be overseen by a building surveyor and council officers to ensure it is undertake in a responsible matter.
During the project’s public advertising period, one representation was received by three property owners.
The representation considered the treatment of boundary fences, the impacts on the fence and the amenity and inconvenience that could be caused during the demolition of the property.
