Also known as the cordial factory, the Canal Street site forms part of the $20 million C.H Smith redevelopment being led by Errol Stewart.
ARTAS principal architect Scott Curran said it had been a long process to ensure the 150-year-old building was properly restored.
“The building has been in a bad way for some time and all reports said it should be knocked down,” he said.
“But, our obligation was to ensure these heritage buildings were protected, so we have spent a long time looking at the structure to determine how to keep it upright.
“We are working really hard to bring these old buildings back to life.”
Starting this week, the development will see the building’s existing steel structure moved and re-purposed, with the addition of a new roof and new floors.
Mr Curran said the entire C.H Smith project, including a cafe, restaurant, state government offices and a council-owned 300 space car parking facility, was on track to be completed by April next year.
