“A police investigation is ongoing to determine the origin of the rifle and ammunition, which were located by police during a search of the area shortly after the incident,” Inspector Adrian Bodnar said.
“It is concerning that a rifle of this calibre was carried and used in the Hobart CBD.
“I assure members of the community that the ongoing police investigation is thorough and following particular lines of inquiry that strongly suggest this incident was targeted.”
Nobody was injured, but police are continuing to hunt for two people seen in the area of the Harrington Street venue around the time of the shooting.
The first man has been described as being about 40-years-old, 173 to 182 centimetres tall, muscly with red facial hair and wearing a long-sleeved black top, black trousers and black boots.
The second person was wearing a dark coloured top and dark jeans.
Anyone with information about the incident or who has footage from Harrington or Bathurst streets should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
