The organiser of an upcoming seafood extravaganza in the North-East has no concerns over a lack of scallops, following news that Tasmania’s scallop fishery will be closed for two years.

Tassie Scallop Fiesta coordinator Tony Scott assured the community there would be plenty of scallops available for the Bridport event, which will feature cooking demonstrations, scallop splitting competitions, and delicious food.
“There hasn’t been commercial scallop fishing within Tasmanian-controlled waters for about four years now so it’s situation normal as far as where we get our scallops,” Mr Scott said.

“In fact, the pre season survey of beds east of both King and Flinders Islands has already started, showing the fish available should be great in quality and quantity by the time the season officially starts in mid to late July.”
Mr Scott said the aim of the fiesta was to celebrate Bridport’s fishing and seafaring heritage, “with an up-to-date twist”.
