The Rotary Club of Launceston is spearheading a project which aims to ensure all members of New Horizons can enjoy the outdoors.
Staff and club members use the outdoor area behind the club’s car park, but it’s currently inaccessible to those in wheelchairs or with walking difficulties due to uneven ground.
Rotary member John Williams said work on the project would begin on Saturday.
“I think it’ll end up being a really nice inclusive space, not just for New Horizons, but for a lot of people to enjoy,” Mr Williams said.
Mr Williams said the project would involve installing a timber deck with a ramp, a new barbecue area, new paving, artificial turf, new bitumen parking area, light and power to the garage, a new fence and gate, and the planting of new trees and shrubs.
“I’m envisioning there will be a couple of bumps, because we want to do it right and we want to do it the first time,” he said.
“We at Rotary, we’re going to be getting in here and building everything ourselves, doing paving, and so on. We’re no experts, but we try hard.”
New Horizons Club manager Belinda Kitto said the project was exciting and “very special”.
“It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but we’ve never had the funding,” she said.
“The only way that New Horizons can continue to succeed is through our partnerships, and Rotary is a massive part of that.
“We’re very grateful, because they really do just get in and get things done.”
New Horizons has provided sport, recreational, and social opportunities for people with a disability since 1986. It's Mowbray headquarters hosts programs such as craft, song, and dance, vegetable growing, carpet bowls, and is open for social use five days a week.
Mr Williams said the project was being assisted by Crossroads Civil, Glebe Gardens, Lister Electrical, and Timberlink, who were supplying materials and labour.
He said other community members interested in being involved could contact him on 0411 177 744.
“The more the merrier,” he said.
