A Facebook post on Saturday announced the St Matthias’ Church at Windermere was on the list of Anglican churches mooted for sale.
Residents shared their memories of the church and expressed sadness about the announcement.
Plans for a public meeting to be held to consider the way forward for the church, have been touted, as well as a “save St Matthias’ fund”.
“I am sad to have to say we have been informed that our St Matthias’ Church At Windermere is on the list for sale by the Anglican Church of Tasmania to raise funds for National Redress payments to victims of sexual abuse,” the Facebook post said.
“Submissions must be in by October 1 to challenge this decision.”
The church was asking people to show their support by visiting the East Tamar site on the weekend “to discuss, reflect, or browse the history display”.
“The time has come to stand up and be counted. Your prayers would be appreciated,” the post said.
The church says 175th anniversary celebrations in November willd still be going ahead.
