Blue-green algae was recently discovered at the Selbourne lake by the Meander Valley Council, prompting advice from Public Health Tasmania for people to avoid the area.
Acting director of Public Health Dr Scott McKeown said seasonal blue-green algal blooms have occurred regularly at the site in recent years.
“Public Health Services advises the public not to use the lake for recreational purposes until monitoring results indicate it is safe to do so,” he said.
“The Meander Valley Council has taken water samples for analysis to determine species and toxicity status.
“[The] council, as in past years, has erected precautionary signage advising the public not to use the water body until analysis results indicate it is suitable to do otherwise.”
