An application submitted by Epuron Solar to build the farm adjacent to the George Town Airport will be considered by the George Town Council at its monthly meeting on Wednesday.
The solar panels would generate up to five megawatts of energy and provide power to about 2000 homes, according to project manager Shane Bartel.
“It would be the first utility-sized solar farm in Tassie,” he said.
If the farm is approved it would be the second renewable energy generation project lead by Mr Bartel to gain approval this year in the municipality.
The council approved an extension of the Low Head Wind Farm at its February meeting, ensuring that 10 new wind turbines would be built between Low Head and Beechford.
Mr Bartel, who is the director of Low Head Wind Farm, said the area was an ideal location for renewable energy projects because of its proximity to the George Town Sub Station.
“It provides a greater efficiency for generation when located close to the sub station,” he said.
“The closer you are to the George Town Sub Station, the less amount of residual energy from your generator projects you will lose.”
Mr Bartel said he was unsure how many jobs the project would generate.
“It’s always hard to put a number on how many jobs will be created, but we know that there will be jobs for local companies and local contractors for the 25-year lease period after construction,” he said.
A representor in the council’s agenda raised concerns about the farm negatively affecting property prices.
Mr Bartel said the proposed location meant it should not affect other residential properties.
“The farm should not have any impact on landowners in the area and should not affect property prices,” he said.
George Town mayor Bridget Archer said the council was open to further renewable projects.
