Joining the senior leadership team, Mr Whiteley said he was committed to continuing the college’s momentum.
“The University College prides itself on providing learning opportunities to those who may have thought higher education was out of their reach,” he said.
“The work that has been done to date is significant, with the green light to establish the college coming less than two years ago, and the first students starting in 2017.
“I pay tribute to the team for getting the college to where it is today and achieving so much in a short space of time.
“I am excited to be continuing that good work and focusing on the students we are here to support, whether they be enrolling at university for the first time or are industry employees looking to upskill.”
The first in his family to attend university, Mr Whiteley has a long association with UTAS including roles as an adjunct lecturer.
Most recently he worked as executive general manager at Elphinstone Pty Ltd and as managing director of Southern Prospect.
Mr Whiteley will be predominantly based at the college’s Cradle Coast campus.
