Treasurer Peter Gutwein said $200,000 would be invested to secure the new games, subject to the expected expansion of the men’s league in 2018/19.
The cash would be used to support operational expenditure including ambulance services, security, players’ expenses, accommodation, and assistance towards marketing and community engagement.
“The 2017 debut BBL and WBBL double header in Launceston attracted almost 17,000 fans to UTAS Stadium and a TV audience of 900,000,” Mr Gutwein said.
“We know that crowds would generate in excess of $1 million per game for the Northern economy, so this is an outstanding boost for regional Tasmania.
“Interestingly, it will also show up-and-coming boys and girls just what opportunities are available to them, providing inspiration for the next generation of stars.”
Cricket Tasmania chief executive Nick Cummins said the success of the Launceston match broke down many sporting barriers and showed everyone that cricket had statewide appeal.
“The Hurricanes’ role is to inspire our next generation of cricketers, and be a visible pathway in the community,” Mr Cummins said.
“Bringing elite content like the WBBL to the North-West will be a game changer for local kids and the wider community.”
Mr Gutwein said the additional games would build on the four Hurricanes’ matches played at Blundstone Arena.
Labor Denison MHA Scott Bacon said his party would “be making our own policy announcements in the lead up to election day” in relation to the Big Bash League.
