But he told Parliament yesterday that no further Government assistance was offered to the project during the talks.

"I did indicate clearly, however, that the Government supports the pulp mill and what is wrong with that? That is public policy," Mr Aird said.

Bass Greens MHA Kim Booth asked Mr Aird who the financiers were, whether financial incentives were offered and for a full itinerary of the trip.

But Mr Aird ignored the questions saying that he had taken the opportunity to hold the meetings while he was in Europe on other business, "because sometimes it is better to meet people personally".

Mr Aird said that the meetings had reconfirmed that the proposed $2 billion pulp mill would be the cleanest of its type in the world.

"People need to be reassured that the environmental outcomes will be as stated," he said.
