“The music and lyrics were written by Dolly Parton, and it's a little bit of Dolly's story in that it's a story of women in the workplace in the early '80s that weren't treated with respect or equally,” director Denise Sam said.
The satirical, quick-witted musical is based on the 1980 film starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
In a misogynistic workplace, the frustrated women get their own back against their smarmy boss, and make some positive changes to their office, through a story of comedy, ensemble song and dance.
Co-production manager Jo Stirling said the musical is an ideal for a fun (but not child-friendly) evening's entertainment – a “perfect girls’ night out”.
9 to 5: The Musical opens Friday, June 16, at the Earl Arts Centre. Tickets on sale through Theatre North.
