Kings Meadows resident Mike Richardson’s son, Josh, bought Jed 19 years ago, after seeing the puppy advertised in The Examiner.
Josh moved to Perth, Western Australia a few months later.
He unceremoniously left Jed with his unwitting new best friend, Mr Richardson.
"[Josh] never came back for a few years, so I got lumbered with the dog," Mr Richardson said.
Jed’s a Jack Russell, but his appearance led his family to believe he is mixed with a mystery breed.
Josh’s mum would pop tiny Jed in her handbag when she went to the supermarket.
Jed's been known to stroll between the family's different homes, at times ambling up to three kilometres unaccompanied, and arriving at his destination unharmed.
"He's so old...he's out the backyard and he crashed into the chook," Mr Richardson said.
"He's almost blind, and there's only certain things he can hear - the tingle of the dishes when his dinner's being done or a sharp yell."
Jed became seriously ill a few months ago, but surprised the vet and his relieved family by bouncing back.
"I thought, 'this is it,' but then he came good," Mr Richardson said.
"[He's] beautiful...he's just so placid,” he said.
“He’s been brilliant with the kids, but now he’s starting to slow down.”
Mr Richardson attributed Jed’s longevity to his “varied diet”, steering clear of feeding Jed canned food and plenty of exercise.
Jed will turn 20 in mid 2016.
