Nicole Louise Frain pleaded guilty to negligent driving causing death and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm in the Hobart Magistrates Court this week.
Frain, 23, killed Ivan Tchappat, 78, in a head-on smash at Jericho on the Midland Highway on December 7 last year, the court heard.
Frain also caused serious spinal injuries to Mr Tchappat’s wife, Margaret, 77, who was in the passenger seat.
In December last year, police said Mr and Mrs Tchappat, both of Prospect, were travelling toward Launceston when Frain’s silver Mazda crossed to the other side of the road and collided with their car.
Mr Tchappat was declared dead at the scene.
The court heard Frain had awoken early that day to go to the gym before her journey.
Frain pulled over to rest twice before the crash.
Following the crash, Frain told another motorist at the scene she may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Magistrate Glenn Hay suspended Frain’s licence for 18 months and sentenced her to three months jail, but the sentence was wholly suspended for three years.
