Hobart hospitality worker Eva Mackinley has designed a campaign called The Last Straw in an attempt to see pubs, clubs and restaurants around the nation stop using plastic straws.
In landfill, plastic straws take more than 200 years to bio-degrade and she believes there are better alternatives out there.
``Think about how many plastic straws get thrown into the bin at pubs and clubs, it's thousands. They all end up in landfill,'' she said.
``We're encouraging businesses to look at alternatives. There are many straws that provide the same function but are bio-degradable and release 50 per cent less carbon into the atmosphere.''
Ms Mackinley said she has plans to start a social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter in the coming months to encourage businesses to get involved.
THA northern representative and owner of Launceston's Star Bar Mick Aquarola said he is willing to discuss the push with Ms Mackinley.
``It's not an idea that I've heard of, but if it's cost effective then sure,'' he said.
``If the proposal is taken to the THA then we'd consider it, but it's got to come at a benefit to customers as well.''
